Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club

ImageThe Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club has its roots stemming directly from the many Finnish immigrants who settled in the Sault Ste. Marie area in the mid-1900s. The early club members were members of the Finnish immigrant community, who had belonged to various clubs in their homeland and wanted to recreate a sense of community in their new home. Over the years, the club has hosted many major competitions including Canada Cup, World Junior selection races, North American Cup, Provincial Championships, Ontario Cup races and interdivisional races. Highlights have included the Canadian Senior Championships in 1970 and 1978 and the Canadian Masters Championships in 1983 and 1987. The club has an active Jackrabbit programme, a racing programme and offers adults lessons. Special events include the annual Hiawatha Invitation ski race, the Mabel Lake Backcountry Tour and lantern skiing.

The club’s volunteers are active in building and maintaining a trail system at Hiawatha Highlands. The trail system caters to both beginner and advanced skiers, and to snowshoe enthusiasts. Rental of skis and snowshoes is available seven days a week between 9 and 5. We offer 50 km of trails:

    * 23.5 kilometres of skating trails
    * 36 kilometres of classic trials
    * 14 kilometre backcountry trail (track set in late season)
    * 2 km of skating/classic trail is lighted until 10:00 PM
    * Snowshoeing trails of varying length and difficulty.
    * Trail, conditions and rental information available at hiawathahighlands.com

Free parking and the warmth of the Kinsmen Centre are available seven days a week. Overnight accommodations are available only five to ten minutes away.
