North Bay Nordic’s former Junior Racer and now, National Team Member, Dave Nighbor was in town to help athletes develop their skills for the coming Cross Country Ski season. Dave took time from his busy schedule to run a training camp for the junior racers of his club and also invited athletes from across Northern Ontario to join in.
Dave, along with his sister Kim Nighbor, a Massage Therapist, put together an excellent learning and training experience for the athletes. Dave explained what the athletes need to do to get better, to set goals and how to look at each day, so that everything fits in.
Dave taught technique, time management and expected the athletes to do their part at the camp; take notes, work on their technique and go away with a new focus and expectations for the coming season. Kim explained the importance of nutrition, recovery with stretching and not to just go through the motions of stretching. Kim challenged the athletes to feel their muscles stretching and working. She gave excellent examples of how she wasn’t able to stretch to her knees when she was an athlete and now she can touch the floor.
Dave challenged the athletes to feel their body’s movement when training. He also told them not to waste their time going through the motions of training, if the workout was not going well. You don’t want to train your body to do something that you won’t benefit from. You could see the lights going on in the athletes’ eyes, when the technique clicked and became easier and Dave’s comments made sense to them. Not one athlete complained about the work or the ideas being given them. All the athletes felt honored to have Dave work so closely to them.
The following athletes and coaches where in attendance; New Liskeard; Deanna Caldwell, Dennis Colley, coach Anthony Story, Sudbury area; Eric Schryer, Andrew Kendall and Dave Endleman, coach Patti Kitler and from North Bay Nordic; Adam Birosh, Liam Patterson, Scott Hill, Greg Kilroy, Jake Porter, Nel Vandermeer, Coaches Bob Porter and Doug Winter.
I would like to thank Dave and Kim for taking the time to excite NOD’s up and coming racers to understand how to focus on being the best you can be.
